Sindh Governor Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad Khan has said that besides pushing up the Mass Transit Programme, the Federal Government is fully focusing on providing transport facilities to people in other major cities as well.
On arrival in Karachi after attending various meetings and call on, the Governor said that President Asif Ali Zardari has issued clear directives to concerned departments in this regard and he stressed on providing complete cooperation and equipping the transport system with modern facilities.
The governor informed that various transport related programs were reviewed in meetings with Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen and Secretary General Salman Farooqi.
He said progress in respect of CNG Buses, Karachi circular Railway, KRTS and light Rail Transit system was reviewed.
In the meetings, he said, Nazim Karachi Mustafa Kamal and Chief Secretary Fazalur Rehman gave briefings on different projects.
The Governor pointed out that for CNG Buses, the Federal Government has sanctioned Rs 2.5 billion under which 400 such buses would be brought on Karachi roads. He said by December 209, some 500 buses would start plying for which Rs 500 million would be made available.
Dr Ishrat-ul-Ebad said that President Asif Zardari has issued directives for necessary funding by various banks for CNG buses and matters with banks would soon be finalised.
Regarding Karachi Circular Railway, he said he was told that it would be completed with Japan’s cooperation with an investment of Rs 1.7 billion while KRTS project will be accomplished with an investment of Rs 450 million dollars with the cooperation of Asian Development Bank.
He said Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen had assured that he would personally get the matters finalised during visit to Philippine.
He said that Light Rail Transport system would cost 569 million dollars.
Ebad said that completion of these four projects, a modern mass transit system in Karachi could be established and people would have comfortable, speedy and modern commuting facilities.
He thanked President Asif Ali Zardari for his special and personal interest and also appreciated the efforts of Finance Minister Shaukat Tareen and Secretary General Salman Farooqi.
