Karachi Mass Transit Project A system, that should have materialized decades ago: Zakaria Usman

Mr. Zakaria Usman, President FPCCI has express his serious concern over long awaited plan of Karachi Mass Transit Project which was planned years back with hard work involving years of surveys, studies, new laws, relocation of people, a committed international financier, provision of guarantees and much more. Now it need to resolve and sincere will to push it through although this should have happened decades ago.

He further said that Karachi Mass Transit Project was one of the unfortunate projects in the country’s history that had faced inordinate delays. Though several years had passed, the work on the project could not be started due to bureaucratic hurdles.

The President FPCCI drew the attention of the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to the fact that Karachi is 60 times larger than it was when Pakistan was created in 1947. It is the world’s fastest growing mega city like Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Lagos, Jakarta, Mumbai, Delhi and Chicago. It has now become the world's 7th largest metropolis with an estimated population of nearly 20 million inhabitants. He said that Karachi is economic lifeline of Pakistan and is the country's financial capital. It is the financial and industrial powerhouse of the country which contributes 25% of GDP. The port of Karachi handles 60 percent of Pakistan’s cargo and the Karachi Stock Exchange is one of Asia’s most active trading money market.

He said that 15 years back the transport system of Karachi was satisfactory which was consisting of circular railways, KRTC buses, private coaches and taxies. The state owned circular railway and big buses were gradually broken due to lack of maintenance and attention of the concerned authorities. Now after 15 years the people are at the mercy of thousands of three wheelers and qingqi. Rather we should have upgraded the transport system instead we dropped it from our standard.

He further stated that many of the potential benefits of urbanization will be hard to realize unless there is improved city governance and serious efforts to reduce the level of violence in Karachi.  So what has already been done and what can Nawaz Sharif Government do to give a mass transit system that any mega city like Karachi must have, he urged.

The President of the apex trade body requested the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and the Governor and Chief Minister Sindh to give priority to Karachi Mass Transit Project which needs sincerity for implementation. This will bring much needed foreign direct investment in the country and it will impact positively on trade and economic activities in Pakistan and will reduce the level of fuel consumption in public and private transportation from one corner of the city to another corner, reflecting in reduction of import of oil which is one of the major importing items. This will also provide pollution free healthy environment.

Germany to help women entrepreneurship in Pakistan - Klinner

The Consul General of Federal Republic of Germany, Dr Tilo Klinner gas asked the apex trade body – Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) to provide him the concrete proposals required for promoting and strengthening women entrepreneurship in Pakistan. The German diplomat was talking to the acting President FPCCI Rukhsana Jehangir along with Vice Presidents, Gulzar Firoz, Abdul Khaliq and Chairman Standing Committee on Foreign Investment Shaikh Humayun Saeed, and Mir Nasir Abbas D.G International Affairs in a meeting held here the CG also discussed matters of mutual interests.  

The CG also informed the business representatives that he would also hold one more session in FPCCI where he will bring the visa officer to streamline the visa issuance which is mentioned at every step.

The CG advised Rukhsana Jehangir to present all those proposals which require strengthening and support to women entrepreneurial projects from German agencies. He said that database of women stakeholders would be collected so as to progress forward and take up the matter in Berlin.

The Consul General Dr. Klinner was joined by Mian Abrar and Mr. Qazi Managing Director BSAF, and President of Pakistan German Business Forum. The acting President emphasized the need for close collaboration with the German Consulate for enhancing bilateral trade and investment in Pakistan. She further added that being a woman Vice President of apex trade body her prime objective is to give support to women entrepreneurs who are mostly small and medium, and require full support in the field of product development and capacity building on order to attract international buyers and suppliers. She requested the CG to get support for Agencies such as GIZ and other prominent organizations and government agencies who can provide support in the field of fairs and exhibitions, value addition, etc.

Vice President FPCCI, Gulzar Firoz pointed out that there were very little German delegations visiting Pakistan and emphasized the need for getting more trade and investment delegations. Especially after the visit of German Foreign Minister to Pakistan and after the general elections held in Pakistan the environment is feasible and conducive to business development. He further added that FPCCI through Pak-German Business Council can promote collaboration in the field of chemicals, which will eventually help the export sector of Pakistan. Mr. Humayun Sayeed while appreciating the initiative taken by the Vice President, said that the FPCCI and Pak-German Business Forum are duplicating tasks by working in isolation with each other instead of work through the Business Council of FPCCI. He suggested that we can work more positively this way, join hands and hold a joint session since both of us have a common goal. It was decided by the Consul General that an interactive session should be held at FPCCI having BoD of Pak-German Business Forum and office bearers of Pak-German Business Council PGBF would also like to take SAARC on board when they meet at the FPCCI.

PAK-BRAZIL TWO WAY TRADE NEEDS TO BE EXPAND

Brazil is the largest trade partner of Pakistan in Latin America this was stated by President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry while meeting with Mr.Alfredo Leoni, Ambassador of Brazil to Pakistan. He said that current volume of bilateral trade which is just US $ 102 million is not reflective of our relations and potential available in the two countries. He also emphasized to enhance both export and import from Pakistan and vise versa. Mr.Zubair Ahmed Malik informed that diplomatic relations between Pakistan and Brazil were established in 1952 since then both countries are enjoying cordial relations.

The meeting between President FPCCI and Brazilian Ambassador discussed various issues and emphasized to promote market economy. They also discussed possibility of joint ventures in various feasible sectors including Halal food, information technology; poultry etc. at present trade between the two countries is carried out via third country from Au Dhabi or Istanbul due to no direct flight from Pakistan. Both countries should also rationalize trade rules and tariff to promote trade.

Mr.Alfredo Leoni informed that Brazilian Businessmen are reluctant to visit Pakistan due to bad impression created by Media but he believes that ground reality is quite different. He emphasized that both countries should make joint efforts to over come extremism and terrorism. He informed that Brazil imports football from Sialkot, Pakistan. He also informed that Brazil will host 2014 Football World Cup. He also said that Brazil is the largest beef and meat exporter to South America. 

The commercial section of Brazilian Embassy which also includes Pakistani attended the meting and Mr.Zubair Ahmed Malik; President FPCCI suggested them to cooperate to enhance bilateral relation between Pakistan and Brazil. Mr.Zubair Ahmed Malik also proposed to form Pak-Brazil Joint Business Council. Justice Mushir Alam lauds SSUET for meeting the challenge

The Chief Justice of the High Court of Sindh, Justice Mushir Alam, has lauded the Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology (SSUET), Karachi, for producing 10,000 engineers for Pakistan serving humanity nationally and internationally with global vision. 

He was addressing as chief guest at a 4000-strong gathering at the 16th Convocation-2013 of the University held at the Karachi Expo Center on March 26. Around 1100 passing out graduates, including a group having done Masters in Civil, Bio-Medical Engineering and Mathematics, were conferred degrees in Computer, Electronics, Civil, Bio-Medical and Telecom Engineering and Computer Science. 

Various Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were also given to students bagging first, second and third positions in all the engineering disciplines. 

Addressing the passing out graduates, the Chief Justice Mushir Alam told them that they are equipped with creative and innovative abilities and prepared to take the challenges head on, hold reigns of this nation and steer it towards more successful and technologically advanced Pakistan. 

Pakistan, he pointed out, is land of opportunity and Allah has gifted Pakistan with 3rd largest coal mine; 3rd number in cotton production; 4th number in rice production; 5th largest gold mine, 6th largest army; 7th nuclear power, 11th biggest gas reservoir; 11th number in wheat production and world’s biggest youth (20-30 years) make up nearly one-third of Pakistan’s total population. 

“But what we lack is true, upright and loyal leadership in Pakistan,” CJ Mushir Alam said adding that unfortunately our industries are shutting down because of acute energy crises and this land of opportunities was in the grip of few handful opportunists who are plundering Pakistan for personal gains. 

“Just as we have high confidence on your capabilities and on the excellence of the academic and attitudinal grooming each one of you has received, I personally, and above all your parents, family members and Pakistan all have very high expectations from each of you."

It is strong conviction of all of us that you the engineers can changed the country if you devote your energy and time to make new breakthroughs, Chief Justice Mushir Alam emphasized and added that all above resources Pakistan was gifted with awaits your exploration to convert Pakistan as a strong industrialized and economically viable country. 

The Chief Justice SHC said that Pakistan, after long dictatorial rule has achieved a mile stone by completing first ever five year of democratic rule and day before yesterday witnessed swearing in of Justice (Rtd) Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as caretaker Prime Minister of Pakistan, appointments of former judges as Chief Minister in KPK, Sindh is clear manifestation of trust people have on the judiciary of Pakistan. 

He said it was not the job of judiciary to run the country. The responsibility lies on the elected representatives. Responsibility of the judiciary is to ensure that the state is being run by rule of law and in accordance with the Constitutions. 

Present judiciary, he continued, has fostered and strengthens the democracy by ensuring rule of law and equal treatment and protection of law. For many this democratic rule was not a pleasing experience but democracy has to be given chance and now we are at the cross road, here your contribution to the society will certainly set the direction for the nation. 

He told them to use their right of franchise sensibly and honestly. ”As a nation we have travelled 66 years. Throughout this journey Pakistan was led by many dictatorial rules and intermittently for a short while by the controlled democracy. It is not the distance that many nations cover matters. What matters is the direction we have chosen to move forward. If the directions are set right we are sure to reach the destination, no matter how long the journey is otherwise we will continue to wander rudderless and we lost in the history."   

Addressing the young engineers, CJ Mushir Alam told them that they are fortunate to live in present day time. They are witness to a change – change from rule of tyranny to the rule of law. “You have seen in your time how just a ‘No’ of Honorable Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry to the unconstitutional demand of a dictator on 9th March 2007 has changed the entire scenario. Just one ‘No’ triggered whole event of change in the society, it has resurrected moral renaissance in Pakistan , it has changed the mindset of the people.” 

Now, he said, each member of the society is looking forward to a change for a better, prosperous and just Pakistan. “It is you the educated youth to rest the responsibility to bring the change and to turn the wheel of prosperity and bring into being justice, fair and peaceful society; where life and liberty of every citizen is protected, all are treated equally and have an equal opportunity to grow and where rule of law reign supreme."

This university CJ SHC, pointed out, has equipped you with the chisel of knowledge and wisdom and now it was for them how to effectively use this to shape out Pakistan of your dream. 

He said their mission in life should be to go out to serve people of their country and use their knowledge to bring change and it was now their turn to contribute. 

Earlier in his address and report, Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Jawd Hussain Rizvi informed that since the establishment of this university in 1994, education has been provided to over 10,000 students in a number of disciplines from Civil to Bio-Medical Engineering. 

He revealed that the university is offering Ph.D program in Electronic and Computer Engineering only for its faculty members and currently there were 15 students pursuing Ph.D studies and some of them receive their degrees in coming year while the university plans to offer Ph.D programme in other disciplines also. 

He said the university believes in providing its students with access to all necessary tools and its state-of-the-art labs are equipped with modern equipment meeting international standards. He said the faculty is dedicated and well qualified. 

He congratulated the graduating class of 2012 and their loved ones and said may the years they spent at SSUET be the best years of their life and may these years pave the way for greater success and happiness of thyeir future. 

He quoted great reformer and educationist Sir Syed Ahmed Khan saying that “national progress is the sum total of the individuals, labour, honour, honesty and sympathy. Similarly national downfall is the cumulative results of individuals, laziness, dishonesty, selfishness and other weaknesses of character."

This university, he said, operates on the philosophy of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan with no restriction on admissions on the basis of cast, creed or domicile. He said admissions are provided on the basis of merit alone and for the reason, the SSUET has seen an increasing influx of talented students From all parts of Pakistan. 

On the occasion a total of 1123 students were conferred degrees in various engineering disciplines including 255 in Civil, 324 in Electronics, 100 in Telecom, 78 in Bio-Medical and 275 in Civil Engineering and 91 in Computer Science. 

Top position holders were awarded Z.A. Nizami, Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Muhammed Zakir Ali Khan, Dr A.T. Khan, Bashir A. Malik and Hasan Nasir University Gold Medals besides University Silver and Bronze medals in the six engineering disciplines. 

Among others, the convocation was attended by renowned nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, Chairman Pakistan Engineering Council Engr Syed Abdul Qadir Shah, Members of SSUET’s Board of Governors, Members of Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association (AMUOBA) and a large number of city’s elite. The proceedings were conducted by the SSUET Registrar, Shah Mahmood H Syed.

Violations of traffic laws: Karachi police enhanced amount of fines

Taking drastic step to fill its empty coffer, Karachi police Monday enhanced amount of fines on 52 different violations of traffic laws to manifolds. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Karachi, Abdul Khaliq Sheikh announced the increase in fines. Fine on driving a vehicle without licence has been increase from Rs300 to Rs1000, violation of traffic signal from Rs100 to Rs500, over-speeding from Rs50 to Rs400, having fake fitness certificate from Rs400 to Rs2000.

Earlier, the police had cancelled the permits of vehicles with tinted glass, besides slapping ban on driving motor bikes with helmet coving face.(FP)

KARACHI ADMINISTRATOR VISITS UNDER CONSTRUCTION HOSPITALS

KMC Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said construction of a 50 bed each hospital in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Federal B-Area Block 13 was underway speedily and construction of both hospitals in current fiscal year would be completed to provide better health care facilities to citizens. He said this during a visit of both under construction hospitals along with the D.G Technical Services Altaf G. Memon, Sr. Director Medical Services Dr. A.D Sajnani, Project Directors and other concerned engineers. Administrator Karachi said sum of Rs165million would incur on the construction of hospital in Gulistan-e-Jauhar and this would be completed in a year. 
The hospital building which spread on 48thousand square feet land would have the emergency, diagnosis facility, OPD, Operation Theatre, ICU, Wards for Women and Children and General Wards. This three storey hospital would provide medical facilities to the residents of localities located at from around Nipa Chowrangi to Safoora Goth. While visiting the Federal B-Area Block 13, Administrator Muhammad Hussain Syed said this hospital would be constructed with a cost of Rs165million in a year with all the necessary medical and health care facilities to be provided in this three storey building. He said for providing treatment to people suffered with cardiovascular diseases, this hospital would be affiliated with the Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases. He said the construction work on these projects was started and it is expected to be completed on time. 
Administrator Karachi said the development wing of health department of Government of Sindh was providing cooperation to KMC in the provision of funds for these hospitals. He said that Karachi had lack of medical facilities as compared with population here and citizens had to face difficulties due to immense rush of patients in all big hospitals. He said KMC through 13 big hospitals, 275 dispensaries, clinics and maternity homes was providing citizens with medical facilities. He said a new block consisting of 200 beds in Sobhraj Maternity home had also been built to facilitate citizens.

Iran to invest in Karachi’s public transport system

Iran has expressed interest in playing a role in the modernisation of Karachi’s public transport system.

According to the Tehran-based Press TV, Iranian Consul General Mehdi Sobhani showed his country’s willingness in this regard during a meeting with Karachi Metropolitan Corporation Administrator Hussain Syed.

The Iranian envoy said Tehran was prepared to implement the bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Karachi to provide a fast and more efficient service. Sobhani added that Iranian businessmen were ready to invest in solid waste management, dairy production, construction of industrial slaughterhouses and energy sector in the port city.

Syed said the BRT system was absolutely necessary in the city to meet the challenges of an ever-increasing urban population.(Express Tribune)

Prevention is the best way to combat brain-eating amoeba

Prevention is considered the best way to avoid the rare ‘brain eating’ disease Naegleria Fowleri, which has already claimed as many as 10 lives in a matter of just a few months in Pakistan’s most populous city of Karachi.

Prevention is the key in this case because the mortality rate of the disease is extremely high. It has to be ensured that the water supply is chlorinated and the citizens are aware about the precautionary measures.

Abstaining from all water-related activities can prevent Naegleria infections, but for many people, this simply is not an option. There are other things people can do.

It’s strongly recommended to avoid swimming in still, warm, brackish water that has loose bottom sediment. Jumping or diving into the same type of water is also to be avoided. The brain-eating amoeba is often caught through swimming in infected water.

Wearing a nose clip or holding your nose if you jump or dive into relatively warm water lakes, rivers, pools or other similar bodies of water is advised since Naegleria Fowleri is transmitted by contaminated water entering the nose. It cannot be passed from person to person, however.

People are warned to avoid getting water too deep into their nostrils and make sure their water supply is properly treated. Those with symptoms are urged to seek help immediately without wasting any time.

The highest incidence of this disease occurs in the hot summer months in children and young adults, with males having the highest incidence of disease.

Naegleria Fowleri, which has a fatality rate of more than 98%, infects people when contaminated water enters the body through the nasal membranes and destroys brain tissues. Symptoms are initially very mild, including a headache, stiff neck, fever and stomachache. Death usually occurs five to seven days after infection.

Naegleria Fowleri is an amoeba that lives in fresh water and soil. The organism goes through three stages in its life cycle: cysts, flagellates, and trophozoites. It is the trophozoite form that causes human disease.

Naegleria are ‘thermophilic’ meaning that they prefer warmer water. However, the cysts are able to survive for months in very cold water. Thus, Naegleria infection is found both in tropical and temperate climates.

Although there are many species of Naegleria, including Naegleria gruberi, only Naegleria fowleri causes human infection. There are other free-living amoebas that cause human disease, including Acanthamoeba.

The organism was officially discovered in Australia in 1965 by Dr M Fowler and Dr R Carter although it’s believed to have occasionally infected humans for centuries. Fortunately, humans are rarely infected with Naegleria fowleri.

The disease was first reported to have surfaced in Karachi, the commercial hub of the country, in 2006 but this year's outbreak has been deadlier making the citizens more concerned.

The awareness campaigns by the concerned authorities can help immensely in combating the deadly disease. The NGOs as well as the government sector should mobilize all their resources in spreading the precautionary measures that could save precious lives.

Karachi Inferno: Factory cleared after 41 hours

The factory building, which was gutted in a massive blaze that claimed 289 lives, was cleared Thursday morning  after 41 hours of rescue work, officials said.

Chief fire officer Ehtishamud Din said the operation continued all night long and after drainage machines pumped water out of the basement the building is now cleared after 41 hours.

Talking to media, he said the upper three floors had already been cleared but problems were faced clearing the basement as it was filled with water and had became extremely hot as a result of continued 18-hour fire.

The fire officer Ehtisham asserted there is no more dead body left at the factory now.

Earlier at night, the second floor of the gutted garment factory caught fire again; however, the fire-tenders brought it under control.

On Thursday morning, affected families staged protest demonstration as the heavy machinery could not be transported to the blaze site, which delayed the relief work at the basement of the factory.

The affected people warned they will themselves drain out the accumulated water after breaking the wall of the factory, if the administration continues to display disregard over the tragedy of so immense proportions.

As many as 217 bodies were kept at Edhi Center; of them, 107 have been delivered to the bereaved families after identification process.

Eight bodies will be dispatched to different areas of Punjab including Muzaffargarh and Rahim Yar Khan.

Edhi Center Sohrab Goth’s official said the bodies being shifted to Punjab cities will be given free-of-cost service.

The loss of lives of 289 innocent people in a factory conflagration has saddened the atmosphere of the metropolis.

Announcing three-day mourning, Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) has called off all organizational and political activities in grief over the incident that claimed 289 lives.

Chief Justice (CJ) of Pakistan and Judges of the Supreme Court offered condolence and prayed for the departed souls of workers who got killed in the factory fire at Karachi and Lahore.

Chief Justice and  Judges assembled Thursday before the start of proceedings of their respective Benches and offered Fateha for the workers of the tragic incidents who were caught in a deadly fire and perished. May Allah Almighty bless their souls and provide strength to their families to bear this irreparable loss. (The Nation)

KMC TO SELL SHOPS OF MALL OF KARACHI THROUGH PUBLIC HOUSING SCHEME

KMC will start booking of shops at ground floor and mezzanine floor of “Mall of Karachi” (Shahabuddin Market in Saddar) through public housing scheme before Ramadan. Metropolitan Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan said this while chairing a meeting on the construction of Shahabuddin Market. 

The meeting was attended by Senior Director Transport & Communication Muhammad Ather, Senior Director Finance Munawwar Imam, Chief Engineer Muhammad Taha, Director Public Housing Scheme Sabah-us-Salam and other officers. Metropolitan Commissioner on this occasion said that KMC will generate revenue through selling shops of Shahabuddin Market through public housing scheme and for this purpose a scheduled bank with its branches will sell the forms and receive the applications in all Pakistan. 

Application forms would be received by paying Rs. 1000/-.Allotment of the shops will be through computerized draw. He further said that this project has been renamed as “Mall of Karachi” .MC said that construction work on this project is going on speedily and this project will worth 735 million and its first phase will complete in 15 months.

SKM equals Aziz Rehmatullah’s record of 12 sports books

By bringing out Asian Glory, Syed Khalid Mahmood (SKM) has equaled the record of A Aziz Rehmatullah, who’s believed to have held the record of authoring the highest number books on the subject of sports.  

The record is being now jointly held by Aziz Rehmatullah, one of the doyens of cricket statisticians in Pakistan, and Syed Khalid Mahmood, a prolific scribe and analyst, as both of them have a dozen books each to their credit.

Aziz Rehmatullah’s maiden title, 26 Years of Pakistan Cricket, was published in 1979 and his last book, Calendar Year’s Kings, came out in 2002.

In between he authored World Cricket Annual (1980), Cricket Close Up (1981), Pakistan Test Cricketers (1981), Masters of Cricket (1982), Who’s Who in Test Cricket (1984), An Eye on Test Cricket (1986), 35 Years of Pakistan Cricket (1987), The Book of One-day Internationals (1989), Pakistan in One-day Internationals (1996) and Who’s Who in One-day Internationals (2001).

LG RECOGNIZED BY RED DOT AND IF DESIGN AWARDS

KARACHI / SEOUL, April 02, 2012 – Fourteen of LG Electronics’ (LG) 2012 products were recognized by the red dot design awards for their excellence in the field of design. A panel of 30 independent judges considered over 4,500 products from 1,800 manufacturers and designers in nearly 60 countries. In all, LG took 12 red dot design awards as well as two honorable mentions.  

LG’s success at the 2012 red dot design awards follows the 14 awards the company received among the 2,923 competing entries at the iF (International Forum) design award earlier in the year. LG Optimus 2.0, an Android-based smartphone interface, was recognized for its unique user interface design. ایک دن میں پچاس سے زا ئد گا ڑ یاں نذر آ تش ہو جا ئیں کسی کو بھی گھر میں گھس کر دن دھا ڑے قتل کر دیا جا ئے کیا یہ المیہ نہیں ؟کچھ دن امن رہتا ہے پھر وہی بگڑتی صو رتحا ل ، روز انہ گھرو ں سے کا م پر نکلنے والوں کو کو ئی امید نہیں ہوتی کہ واپس صیح سلا مت آئیں گیں یا خدا نخوستہ کسی ان جا نی گو لی کا شکا ر ہو جا ئیں گیں کہیں سے کو ئی انسا ن نما حیوا ن وارد ہو کئی گھرو ں کے چشم وچرا غ گل کر کے غا ئب ہو جا ئے ہیں، پھر لا کھ کو شش کر یں قا تلو ں کے با رے میں کچھ پتہ نہیں لگتا ۔خانہ پر ی کے لیے بے گنا ہ لو گ پکڑے جا تے ہیں قا نو ن نا فذ کر نے والے الگ بے بس ہیں گو یاا پنے ہی ملک میں اپنے ہی لو گو ں کے ہا تھو ں ایک دوسر ے کے خو ن سے ہا تھ رنگے جا رہے ہیں ۔درجنو ں لو گو ں کی ہلا کتو ں کے بعد سرکا ری مشنری حرکت میں آتی ہے تصفیہ کے لیے پا رٹیو ں کو ایک جگہ جمع کیاجاتا ہے سیا ست دا ن اپنی پا رٹی کی مظلو میت میں نعر ہ لگاتے ہیں کہ یہ سیا سی نعرے ان کی سیا سی اقتدار کو مستحکم کر تے ہیں ان کے وسائل کا رو بار چلتا ہے ان کی فتح کا پر چم بلندہو تا ہے اور ہماری معصوم عوا م نہیں جا نتے کہ جس جگہ اور جہا ں ان کے مفا دات وا بستہ ہوں وہ اپنی قوم کو قر بانی کے لیے آگے کر دیتے ہیںیہ معصو م عوام اپنی قومیت کے زعم میں ما ری جا تی ہے ۔ کو ئی سندھی ہے تو اسے وڈیرو ں کی بڑا ئی اپنے اندر محسوس ہو تی ہی، کو ئی پنجا بی ہے تو گو جر چو ہدری سب سے اعلی وارفع نظر آتے ہیں ، پشتو ن ہیں تو اپنے اندر خلجی عظمت کے امین بنتے نظر آتے ہیں ۔میںسمجھتی ہو ں کہ پا کستا نی ایک قوم بن کر رہنے میں ہما ری عظمت اور بھلا ئی ہے با قی سب با تیں فضو ل ہیں ہم سب ایک پا کستا نی شہری ہیں جو صدیو ں سے مختلف تہذ یبو ں کا گہو راہ ہی،جہا ںتما م قو میت اپنا ایک ا علی مقام رکھتی ہے اس لسا نی فسادات میں ہم اپنے ہی مسلما ن بھا ئی خو ن بہا رہے ہیں ایسی خطر نا ک صو رتحا ل سے نبٹنے کے لیے ضروری ہے کہ ان ٹا رگٹ کلنگ کے اصل و جو ہا ت کو تلا ش کیا جا ئے جب تک اصل مسئلہ کو حل نہیں کیا جائے گا یہ سلسلہ جا ری رہے گاٹار گٹ کلنگ کی جو لہراس شہر میں آئی ہے خدا کر ئے کہ اس خاتمہ ہو سکے ۔افتخار عارف کی یہ نظم ایسا لگتا ہے اسی شہر کے تنا ظرمیں لکھی گئی آپ کی نذر ہی۔

Glowing tributes paid to eminent writer Zakir Ali Khan

Glowing tributes were paid to the late Zakir Ali Khan, an eminent writer, Aligarhian, former Honorary Vice-Chancellor of Sir Syed University of University & Technology (SSUET), and ex-Managing Director Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB), for his commitment to the mission and vision of great reformer Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, at a condolence reference for him organized by Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association (AMUOBA) at the SSUET’s campus.

The speakers on the occasion recalled the multi-faceted life and achievements of Zakir Ali Khan who served AMUOBA as its General Secretary for five decades and died recently at the age of 86 after a protracted illness..

In his speech the Chancellor SSUET, Engr Z.A. Nizami, spoke about the contributions made by late Zakir Ali Khan, towards promoting the cause of education and literature as outlined by the great Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.. 

He described Zakir Ali Khan as a man having unusual qualities and said he had been one of the most revered and outstanding writer having produced at least 10 most popular books in Urdu. 

He said his sad demise has created a void in both the educational and literary circles besides which would not be filled in near future. He announced to establish a chair after his name at the university in acknowledgment to his services in augmenting the cause of education in general and promoting Urdu in particular.

Engr Nizami said the dream of establishing Sir Syed University in line with the vision of great educationist Sir Syed Ahmed Khan came true because of his efforts and contribution and he made it possible for the University to get the hockey ground for SSUET students opposite the campus.

“He was a noncontroversial person who was loved and respected by all and nobody ever talked against him”, he said adding that besides education, he always emphasized on extracurricular activities and formed a sports department in the university.

Earlier Syed Afzal Karim highlighted the qualities and efforts of Zakir Ali Khan, observing that he was a great protagonist of the vision and mission of great reformer and educationist Sir Syed Ahmed Khan.

Born in July 2026 in Rampur, Zakir Ali Khan did his matric from Rampur, B.Sc from Aligarh in 1945 and B.Sc Engineering from the same university in 1948.

In his professional career, the late Khan had served as Managing Director of KW&SB, Chief Engineer KMV, Honorary Vice-Chancellor SSUET, Founder Member of Board of Governors SSUET, Founder Member Governing Body Aligarh Institute of Technology, President Pakistan Association of Scientists and Scientific Professions, Karachi University Syndicate and Academic Council and Selection Board.

Zakir Ali Khan was the recipient of Alumni Award given to him by Aligarh Alumni Association New York in 2000 and was awarded the First Sir Syed Ahmed Khan International Award for Literature by Aligarh Muslim University, India in 2008.

He was the author of 10 books and represented the best qualities of social engineering through the promotion of professional education thereby impacting the life of a large multiple.

He was also instrumental in creating a new sense of pride and confidence as being a part of modern Islamic heritage through his writings.

He played a significant role in establishment of Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys Association and since the last five decades had remained in Honorary Secretary.

He was actively engaged in the promotion of sports events and also went as team manager to various countries. He worked hard to promote hockey and served as Secretary of Karachi Division Lawn Tennis Association.

The meeting, largely attended by SSUET’s faculty members, staff, students, friends of Zakir Ali Khan and his lovers, concluded with Fateha offered for the departed soul. Dua was performed by renowned Naat Khawan, Mahamoodul Hassan Ashrafi. 

ARRANGEMENTS FOR 12TH RABI-UL-AWWAL

Administrator KMC Muhammad Hussain Syed has directed to remove all garbage collection points around the mosques and route of main procession of Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi(PBUH)and complete all necessary arrangements including cleaning before 12th of Rabi-ul-Awwal. He also instructed to carry out repair and maintenance work of all streets lights and sewerage system in the city. Administrator Karachi said all the municipal resources including machinery, vehicles and manpower should be mobilized for 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal. He said measures should be taken in an efficient way for ensuring cleanliness on 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal especially in and around the Nishter Park. In a meeting held in connection with the arrangements for 12th Rabi-ul-Awwal.

Nasreen Masood elected Rotary Karachi Airport President for 2013-14

Rotarian Nasreen Masood was elected as President of the Rotary Club of Karachi Airport (RCKA) for the Rotary year 2013-14 in the club meeting held at Rangoonwala Hall, Karachi, on December 31, 2011.

Rtn Abdul Hamid was re-elected as President for 2012-13 while Rtn Khalique Laiq and Rtn Mohammad Younus were elected as Vice President and Club Secretary respectively.

Rtn Mahmood Nawaz was re-elected as Joint Secretary while Rtn Nazakat Ali Khan was elected as Treasurer with Rtn Waseem Yousuf getting re-elected as Sergeant At Arms and Sarfaraz Khan getting elected to the post of Club Coordinator.

Rtn Syed Khalid Mahmood (Director Membership Development), Rtn Anwar Jabeen Qureshi (Director Club Service), Rtn Shah Mohammad Anwar (Director Community Service), Rtn Abdul Mobin Khan (Director International Service) and Rtn Anwar Siddiqui (Director Vocational Service) were also elected to the Board for the Rotary year 2012-13.

Board of Secondary Education Karachi announces poverty-cum-merit scholarship

Mrs. Hoor Mazhar Secretary Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) announced that the board will offer poverty-cum-merit scholarship for deserving students enrolled in Class-X in the government secondary schools of the metropolitan. She said that all public-run schools were bound to submit names of 10 deserving students from their schools. The students should have at least 45 per cent marks in the SSC-I exams.

Syed Khalid Mahmood appointed Assistant Governor for 2012-13

Rotarian Syed Khalid Mahmood, Charter President, Rotary Club of Karachi Airport (RCKA), has been appointed as Assistant Governor of the RI District 3271 for Rotary year 2012-13.

The written confirmation in this regard was issued by District Governor-Elect, Rtn, Jalaluddin Shaikh, vide an email dated January 9, 2012, which has been circulated to the RCKA member for information. 

”This indeed is an important position and the District Management has assigned him a very important job which is full of challenges and opportunities. Rtn Khalid Mahmood is a pioneer and founder member of the RCKA and the club feels greatly honoured by his appointment and wishes him best of luck in this position. We extend felicitation to him and pray for his success in his new assignment,” Club Secretary, Rtn S M Anwar wrote while sharing the confirmation letter with the RCKA members.

The RCKA President, Rtn Abdul Hamid, also congratulated Rtn Khalid Mahmood and described his appointment as Assistant Governor as an accomplishment for the club as well. The RCKA was chartered in June 2008.
